The purpose of this blog is to explore the way that people seek to represent their gender and sexuality – individually or as a group – and the way that those representations can be interpreted by others.
Informed by new materialist feminism, the idea is to create a space through photography whereby we can get in the middle of the recursive process of being and knowing one’s identity(ies).
My idea is to hold photography sessions on Fridays (this may be subject to change) wherein people can find a space to express their identities. Those who get involved may choose to explore these identities in whatever way they want, so long as they are respectful of others’ boundaries (if it is a group session).
As a (white, hyper-privileged) cis male, I am conscious of trying not to impose or simply replicate the male gaze, so I am keen to generate a creative process that collaborates with those involved; allowing you to inform the end product. Whether that is merely looking at the photos that have been taken and rearranging the shoot to better represent what you intended, giving me (as photographer) directions, or reversing the dynamic and temporarily becoming the photographer, your input is a valid and desired part of the process.
I would also ask that participants choose which end product they would like portrayed and to write a small piece describing how they want to be seen/understood. The end product will hopefully produce a collaborative hub that serves to represent a wider breadth of GenSex identities.
I will also add a range of links to other awesome blogs, photographers, theorists, and other cool stuff.
Nudity is not compulsory or even encouraged, but welcome if that is part of your representation.
Please note: this may be a brave space for people to explore their identity representations, but any form of bigotry (including, but not limited to, sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, slut/prude-shaming, body shaming, etc.) will not be tolerated.
